Did you know who Johanna was, the lady who made Van Gogh famous?
Regardless of his fame today, Vincent van Gogh wasn't famous until after his death and never achieved success during his lifetime. However, after he died in 1890, his brother Theo inherited most of his work, but he died six months later. This left Theo’s wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, in charge of Van Gogh’s paintings, drawings, and letters. She organized exhibitions across Europe promoting his art and published his letters that helped the public connect on a personal level. Her efforts led to Van Gogh’s gradual recognition, and by the early 20th century, his works began to receive widespread acclaim. Without Johanna, Van Gogh’s work wouldn’t be as influential.
